HomEPraire
Cd and magazine release show
with Joy Shannon and the Beauty Marks &
Will Morrison of The Vacuum Bell
@
2226 E 4th St, Long Beach, CA 90814
Hope to see you at this special show that celebrates the musical collaboration between artist Suzanne Walsh and musicians Joy Shannon, Will Morrison and Mark Sheppard. Suzanne's artwork was the inspiration for the songs on the HomEPraire written by Joy, Will, Mark and Suzanne.
The artistic collaboration is commemorated in the very first Ashes in Orange Peel's art/music/fashion/literary magazine called "Together." The beautiful magazine will be for sale at the show with digital download cards of the full EP. The magazine includes beautiful photos of Joy by Xun Chi, the lyrics of the HomEPrairie songs, plus a special article about Oscar Wilde taken from Joy's recent MA thesis!
About the EP: Joy took direct quotes from the poetic text within Suzanne's art pieces for this show called "Predator Instinct." Joy wrote songs which put a voice to the dynamics between Suzanne's animal characters in her artwork of predators and prey. The result are the haunting songs "Hutchfire," "Predator Instinct," and "Fences in Your Mind." In addition to arrangements with Joy on Celtic harp, cello, accordion, and vocals with Sean Wallace on guitar, Joy also played (and fell in love with) harmonium. (Thank you Johnny for letting her borrow your beautiful instrument!) Mark Sheppard from the Offering produced the EP and wrote interludes between the songs which Joy also performed on. Will Morrison of the Vacuum Bell adds a few of his beautiful tunes and played guitar on "Hutchfire" with Joy.
This was a soul-feeding artistic collaboration and we are excited to share it with you!

Mixing has been going well for 'The Wild and the Wonderful' and the highly talented Jacqui Taylor from The Clan Destined has added some tasty guitar to 'Radio Silence'! And she's experimenting with another track called 'Petrified'! More on that as it develops....

We've also put together an EP for Joy Shannon in collaboration with The Vacuum Bell in LA which is being released from the label/gallery/art project , 'Ashes in Orange Peels' this month! It'll have a live show along with the release
We've also had airplay in Mexico, thanks to Samael! Sherlem Radio and Radio Exceso are playing a selection of our tracks on rotation!
February 27, 2011
We've got 17 tracks finalised for our next album, 'The Wild and the Wonderful' and its a very eclectic mix of songs. Four to the floor songs like 'Radio Silence' to the more chilled tracks like 'Soul Sister'. Now that we've narrowed it down from our batch of 55 things have become a tad easier!
Joy is working on a new EP project which I'm heavily involved with on the production and music side.
The video for 'Sin City' is almost edited as well so watch this space!
December 27, 2010
Its been a very busy year! We put out two albums (Orphan Kisses and The Black Madonna), a video (Sin City - being edited as we write this!), a spoken word album with Peter Owen Jones and a Classical piece..and we're working on 55 new tracks! We're using this time of year to kick back and re-energise! More projects are planned next year and we've got some brilliant music on the way!
November 7, 2010
'The Black Madonna' by Joy Shannon and the Beauty Marks is out on iTunes a whole month early! Yay! It's another eclectic and intense album from Joy. Lyrically strong, it draws from a deep wellspring of personal experience and the Beauty Marks provide her with the musical platform to create a vibe of exquisite beauty.
October 16, 2010
Its always a thrill working on new music - working on an all the angles, trying out sounds and arrangements. I had that feeling over the past week working on the very talented Jo Gabriel's 'Mothlight' recorded with Matt Turner in Butch Vig's studio. Hopefully my first electronica mix did it justice....I'll also do a trip-hop version soon!

Joy Shannon & The Offering. Orphan Kisses album.
One year after the great album THE FISHERMAN’S DAUGHTER, the musician MARK SHEPPARD came back in the middle of 2010, again coupled (or in partnership, or duo?) with the singer JOY SHANNON, to whisper in our ears ORPHAN KISSES. Almost restless and for more than 12 years, MARK didn't stop creating new sounds and now he demonstrates it again in this last production edited as a double CD, which is structured in two parts. The first part is titled LOST and has 8 different tracks, while the second part called FOUND possess 10 themes more. SECONDHAND STORY opens ORPHAN KISSES creating an audio atmosphere filled with romanticism, the first notes of a nostalgic acordeon lead to the brilliant exhibition (display?) of JOY SHANNON's voice. In SO HARD we find a perfect work of overlapping voices in different tones over a rithmic electronic background that doesn't stop. It continues with WAIT in another great melodic interpretation which describes how waiting for love can be so melancolic (nostalgic?). In a different plane we have THE ART OF THE LIVING, one of the most envolving and hypnotic songs for its audio atmosphere where the voice of JOY is always in the first plane. Closing the first CD LOST we listen WAIT FOR ME ON WARADOUR STREET with excellent orchestra works reminding us of a CRAIG ARMSTRONG's style soundtrack.
The second part FOUND gets started with a faster electronic beat in COMMING UP (like a flower), following TWIN FLAME where THE OFFERING explores the soft melodies of the Synth Pop. DETECTION is the fourth song and maybe one of the most increible ones which, over a electronic beat of simple sounds and etheric (?) voices, is filled of deep feelings. SAFE NOW is a another fastinating song with an interesting cord work and together with a fantastic keyboard generate a beat that reminds of the best BRISTOL's Trip Hop. As an epilogue, ORPHAN KISSES finish with the master piece called THE SUN AND THE MOON, a composition of electronic atmosphere which transport us in a subtle way to the most increible etheric sounds. Combining electronic music with cord and wind (?) instruments, MARK SHEPPARD, composer and musician, JOY SHANNON in vocals, lirics and acordeon, together in this ocassion with BRUCE GODFREY playing the cords, ROGER BüRKER playing guitar and PETER BAUER with the synthesizer bass and guitar, the experimental and altenative sounds of THE OFFERING together with the voice of JOY shine more than ever.

A new site and a new start. We've been working on numerous tracks and projects this year.
'Orphan Kisses' (Our Double CD which included contributions from Peter Bauer, Roger Bürke (Both from Five Arms Red) and Bruce Godfrey). Joy Shannon and the Beauty Marks,'The Black Madonna' which Joy and I co-produced. I played ebow, grunge bass and organ on a selection while Joy and the Beauty Marks laid down some excellent vibes. We collaborated with Peter Owen Jones on his spoken word project, 'Psalm' to which we added our own brand of electronica to the mix. The classical project, 'Brave' which was recorded by Patrik Bishay and Olga Huebner of the Frankfurt Philharmonic - This track was released as a charity single for Cancer Research in memory of my cousin, Victoria Sims who died last year. We've had our song, '48 Hours in Tokyo in the vampire movie, 'The Sanguinarian. The Director, Analisa Ravella and her talented crew, aided by all round good egg, Jen Fishback shot us a video for 'Sin City'. This is currently being edited by the highly talented, Paulina Ravella...and now we're working on another 40 tracks! Its been quite a year so far!

Thanks to Analisa Ravella, Jen Fishback, Cast and Crew for shooting our video for 'Sin City' last weekend!
It's a fantasy cautionary tale starring Jon Knight and Corrie Winterholler and it'll be very gothique when it's finished. Joy is playing the part of the storyteller!

Brave is finally released on iTunes...it was written and recorded in 12 minutes session almost 14 years ago!
I had it transcribed for string quartet and was luckily enough to find Patrik Bishay and Olga Haubner to record it.
and they did a fantastic job!
Joy Shannon designed the superb cover which really captured the mood and sentiment of the piece.
It's been released as a tribute to my cousin, Victoria Sims who passed away last year. I plan to donate all proceeds of the sales from iTunes to Cancer Research UK.

Its been a while since my last blog but its been a busy time! We're nearly done with 'Orphan Kisses' and I'm working on the final mixes as I'm writng this.
Joy is doing a shoot for the CD images today so it won't be too long before we have the whole thing ready.
In the meantime we're also working on Joy's 'The Black Madonna' album, which is shaping up to be really dark and deep.
Joy has also exhibited her artwork in a month long exhibition in Santa Ana and has accompanied it with tracks from her own band, 'the Beauty Marks' and also tracks with 'the Offering'.
The vampire film, 'The Sanguinarian' is out for a Spring release in the States and features a track from 'Into the Hive' called '48 Hours in Tokyo'...so watch out for it!
'Brave' is also soon to be released for charity - it's a classical piece I composed 14 years ago and was recently recorded by members of the Frankfurt Philharmonic, Olga Huebner and Patrik Bishay.
The spoken word project with Peter Owen Jones is also nearing a digital release - it's an eclectic mix of electronica with Pete's narration of his book, 'Psalm'. It was a difficult project to put together but its come out really well!

Check out the new review from Collected Sounds.
Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell
Joy Shannon and Mark Sheppard have collaborated to make this haunting, rich record. She’s an experienced musician who plays the harp, cello and accordion and sings. Sheppard wrote the music and she the lyrics. It’s a textured, down tempo record with plenty of atmosphere.
Magdalena is a haunting composition with some great cello and dreamy vocals by Shannon.
The title song is a nightmarish and yet supple excursion that piles on harsh beats to unsettle.
Leaving All But Love (Behind) is dreamy and has a sound that recalls Lili Haydn. The vocal is as ever lovely and expressive.
The World I Knew is an atmospheric song, bird song accompanying Shannon’s siren vocals.
This album’s an intriguing entry into the world of two gifted musicians.

Thanks again to SinSentido Radio for putting 'The Fisherman's Daughter' in their 20 best albums of 2010!
We were in the same list as 'Sounds of the Universe' by Depeche Mode! Yay!
January 3, 2010
We're in the final stages of getting the new album together - 'Orphan Kisses' is an eighteen track opus with an eclectic mix of songs from the chilled orchestral feel of 'Wait for me on Wardour Street' to the electro-tinged 'Sin City'....we're just waiting for strings to be added to a couple of tracks and then it'll be out.
We've also finished a spoken word project with Peter Owen Jones which should be out in the new year. We've put his 'Psalm' book to atmospheric electronica....it was a difficult project to pull off but we think we've got something really unique in the bag.
We're also working on Joy's new album, 'The Black Madonna' and it's sounding like a cross between Robert Johnson and Nine Inch Nails!
Watch this space...we've got some interesting things in the pipeline!
December 20, 2009
The spoken word/ Electronica project with Peter Owen Jones has been mixed and mastered and is ready to go out into cyberspace. It's a blend of unusual electronica with Peter's narration of his book, 'Psalm' - a personal rewriting of the Psalms.
The new 'Joy Shannon and the Offering' album, 'Orphan Kisses' is almost finished - we're working on the mastering at the moment and just have to drop in a string quartet into a couple of tracks. Namely, 'Climbing' and 'Wait for me on Wardour Street'. It'll sound really cool when its done!
We're working on a few end of year tracks, including 'Dear Friends' and 'Dark Star' which are the seeds of two radically different albums.
Then we start work on the new Joy Shannon album, 'The Black Madonna'. It'll be full of strings!
November 30, 2009
The mixing for the 'Orphan Kisses' is going well...18 tracks have been recorded and only a couple of small parts have to be recorded for 'The Art of Living', a collaboration between us and Five Arms Red. It will be released as a special limited edition CD and as download on iTunes and then we'll see what we can do with it.
The new project with Peter Owen Jones is going well. Twelve spoken word pieces taken from his 'Psalms' book have been completed, utilising an eclectic blend of electronica as their base. I'm in the middle of the tweaking stage at the moment to get it sounding like an album..and then on to the mastering......more on that later!
November 15, 2009
I'm working on a new website - not everything is working yet but at least you can see where I'm going with it!
There'll be a links page and a music player added soon when I sort the code out..but for now enjoy!
October 6, 2009
I'm just flabbergasted...1.5 million illegal downloads of the Offering back catalogue. Ten years hard work and its all been stolen....and the royalty cheques I've had in that time amount to £50.
Go do the math.
July 28, 2009
My studio computer is down after a logic board failure! A replacement is on its way and its just a matter of putting it all together.
'Orphan Kisses' is almost done with 14 tracks recorded and it's sounding really great - taking the sound of 'The Fisherman's Daughter' further and making it more cinematic. A case of 'less is more'.
July 28, 2009
Thanks to DJ Ottic is playing two tracks on his Alooga Starlight Radioshow! Many thanks!
July 24, 2009
Thanks to Olaf at Joint Venture Radio in Germany for playing tracks off 'The Fisherman's Daughter' yesterday! He played a full hour of music of 'The Fisherman's Daughter', 'As in the Wilderness' and 'The Opium Wars or Love in Lieu of Laudanum'!!! Thanks very much Sir!
